The Top 5 Brunch Spots in Liberty Village

Liberty Village punches well above its weight at brunch. Five spots are worth planning your Saturday around: Mildred's Temple Kitchen for the pancakes everyone talks about, School for the one with the dog friendly patio, Liberty Soho for comfort food and a late finish, Impact Kitchen if you want brunch that does not undo the week, and Brazen Head when the group wants bottomless bubbles. All five are walkable from almost anywhere in the neighbourhood, which is half the appeal of living here.

Mildred's Temple Kitchen, 85 Hanna Avenue

The one out of town friends have heard of. Mildred's has been at this for more than 35 years, originally over at 99 Sudbury before moving into the Hanna Avenue space, and the famous buttermilk pancakes have outlived every food trend since. Weekend brunch runs 9 in the morning until 3, walk in only, so either get there early or make peace with the wait.

Here is the local's move though. Monday to Friday they do what they call B'Lunch from 10 until 3, same kitchen, same pancakes, a fraction of the crowd, and you can actually book a table. If you work from home in one of the lofts, that is your window.

School Restaurant, 70 Fraser Avenue

The neighbourhood institution, in a restored industrial building with a patio that fills the second the weather turns. School serves weekend brunch and weekday lunch, doors at 9 on Saturday and Sunday and 10 through the week, and there is a monthly feature that is usually some elaborate pancake situation. July's was apple cinnamon with crumble, caramel and pecans.

Two practical notes. They take bookings on Resy up to two weeks out, and they cannot seat groups larger than six during weekend brunch. The patio is dog friendly, which in this neighbourhood matters.

Liberty Soho, 139 East Liberty Street

Liberty Soho sits right at the entrance to the Liberty Market cobblestone walk, and it is the second location of Ruby Soho from King West, with a more neighbourhood feel than the original. Brunch here is weekends only, doors at 10 on Saturday and Sunday.

The menu leans comfort over eggs. Crispy calamari and a proper poutine with cheese curds to share, chicken pot pie, lobster bacon mac and cheese, a smash burger made with wagyu. There is a patio, a Skee-Ball machine, and a kitchen that keeps going until 2 in the morning, which tells you what the place turns into once brunch is done.

Impact Kitchen, 99 Atlantic Avenue

For the mornings when brunch needs to be fuel rather than a nap in food form. Impact Kitchen is nutrition focused and all day, and everything on the menu is free of gluten, refined sugar and seed oils. Breakfast bowls, protein plates, proper coffee.

They open at 8 on weekdays and 9 on weekends, which makes this the answer for anyone who runs the Martin Goodman Trail first and eats after.

Brazen Head Irish Pub, 165 East Liberty Street

For the birthday brunch, the group chat brunch, the one that turns into the afternoon. Brazen Head pours bottomless mimosas Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 until 3, alongside a proper pub brunch menu, on a two level patio.

Book ahead, and know there is a table limit of an hour and a half on the bottomless deal, so the sitting has a clock on it.

That is the five. Honourable mention to Local Public Eatery a few doors down at 171 East Liberty, which does weekend brunch on one of the better patios in the neighbourhood. And yes, we have almost certainly left off your favourite. Tell us and we will go eat there.
