Liberty Village is a dense, walkable pocket squeezed between King West and the rail corridors, where century old factories share sidewalks with glass towers. Living there means everything is close: your coffee, your gym, your patio, your streetcar. It also means you trade space and quiet for that convenience. A neighbourhood built in a factory district

Liberty Village was industrial land for over a century. Toronto Carpet Manufacturing, Brunswick, Irwin Toy, and a long list of others built the brick and beam buildings that give the neighbourhood its character. When industry moved out, studios and tech firms moved in, then the towers followed through the 2000s and 2010s. That mix is the whole personality of the place: a heritage loft with twelve foot ceilings can sit across the street from a condo built five years ago.

The housing

You have three broad options. Hard lofts in the converted factories, which we covered in detail in our hard lofts guide below. Soft lofts and mid rise condos from the early waves of development. And newer high rise towers with the full amenity package. Units skew compact, one bedrooms and one plus dens dominate, and parking is scarce enough that a spot meaningfully changes a unit's value. Layout matters more than square footage here. Two units of identical size can live very differently depending on windows and floor plan.

Getting around

The 504 King streetcar runs along the north edge. Exhibition GO is one stop from Union and reachable on foot over the pedestrian bridge across the rail corridor. Drivers are on the Gardiner in minutes, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on the hour. And the Ontario Line is under construction with Exhibition planned as its western end, which would be a meaningful upgrade for the whole area when it opens.

Daily life

This is the part people either love or leave. Everything is within a ten minute walk: groceries, gyms, the Liberty Market Building, more patios than you will get through in a summer (we ranked our favourites below), and BMO Field and Exhibition Place next door. The flip side: event nights are loud, the streets are busy, and green space is limited for the number of people who live there. Lots of residents treat the waterfront trail as their backyard.

What is changing

Development pressure has not let up. The most talked about proposal right now is a 37 storey tower at the Carpet Factory site, which would bring significant new height into the heart of the Village. Anyone buying here should pay attention to what is proposed nearby, both for construction timelines and for what new supply means for resale.
