There is something special about the first few weeks of spring in Etobicoke. The air smells like fresh rain and damp earth, the grey slush finally disappears from the curbs, and everyone seems to have a little more pep in their step. After months of being cooped up indoors, it is finally time to get back outside and enjoy the neighbourhood.
Whether you are a long time resident or new to the west end, spring is the perfect season to explore our local gems. Here are three of the best ways to soak up the sun and enjoy the blooming season right here in our backyard.
If you want to see spring in full colour, James Gardens is the place to be. This former estate on the west bank of the Humber River is famous for its botanical displays. Every year, the city plants tens of thousands of tulips that transform the flower beds into a sea of red, yellow, and pink.
Beyond the flowers, the park is a maze of terraced stone pathways, spring-fed ponds, and small bridges. It is one of the most peaceful spots in the city to take a morning walk or bring a camera for some nature photography. If you follow the trails far enough, you can even find a scenic lookout that gives you a clear view of the downtown Toronto skyline through the budding trees.

While many people wait until the heat of July to get on the water, spring is actually a fantastic time for a paddle. The Humber River is much quieter this time of year, and the wildlife is incredibly active. You can head down to the Old Mill area and rent a kayak or canoe from local outfitters like Toronto Adventures.
As you glide along the meandering river, keep your eyes peeled for blue herons, turtles sunning themselves on logs, and even the occasional beaver. It is a great way to see the wild side of Etobicoke while getting a bit of a workout. Since the trees haven't fully filled out yet, you can often see much further into the marshes and forest than you can in mid summer.
Spring is the ideal walking weather season. It is not too hot and not too cold, which makes it perfect for a self guided tour of the Islington Village murals. Located along Dundas Street West between Montgomery Road and Kipling Avenue, this outdoor gallery features over 25 massive paintings that tell the story of Etobicoke’s history.
You can grab a coffee at one of the local cafes and spend an hour wandering the blocks to find your favourite piece. Each mural has a unique story, from the early settlers to the local heroes of the world wars. It is a great way to support local businesses while getting your steps in and learning something new about where we live.
Spring moves fast in Ontario. One day it is 5 degrees and the next day the cherry blossoms are falling. Don't let the season pass you by without taking advantage of these local spots. Whether you are on the water, in the gardens, or walking the village streets in Sunnylea or Islington-Bloor, there is plenty to do right here in Etobicoke.
