We're past the halfway mark of summer, and honestly, the back half is the better half this year. Cirque du Soleil is parked on our lakeshore until the end of August, the Waterfront Festival lands in early August, the CNE opens right next door, and Taste of the Kingsway closes things out in September. Here's what to put in the calendar.
New to the area, or thinking about being? Our neighbourhood guides cover the places these events call home.
The big top is up at 2150 Lake Shore Boulevard West, right at Park Lawn, and it's hard to miss if you've driven the lakeshore lately. LUZIA is Cirque's Mexico show, and having it staged a short walk from Humber Bay Shores is a treat we don't get every summer. Performances run through August 30. Go on a clear evening and stroll Marine Parade Drive after.
Marine Parade Drive fills up with live music, food vendors, and an artisan market for two days in early August. It's free, it's on the water, and it's the best excuse of the year to spend a full day in Humber Bay Shores. Friday and Saturday, 10am to 8pm.
Technically it's across the Humber, but Exhibition Place is minutes from south Etobicoke, and half the west end seems to be there on any given evening. Eighteen days of rides, concerts, food you'll regret slightly, and the air show over Labour Day weekend. When the Ex opens, you can feel the season start to turn.
Making a summer of it? A few of our local guides:
South Etobicoke's biggest street festival takes over the Bloor Street West strip in the Kingsway for three days. Restaurants spill onto the street, there's live music on multiple stages, and the whole neighbourhood shows up. Friday evening through Sunday. If you've never walked the Kingsway strip, this is the weekend to do it.
The farmers' markets run all season across the borough, the Waterfront Trail is free every day, and the patios are in their prime. We keep a running guide to the markets if you want dates and locations.
Events change and dates occasionally move, so check the organizers' pages before you head out.
Fall in love with one of these neighbourhoods while you're out? We should talk. It's kind of our thing.
