The Top 5 Ice Cream Spots in Etobicoke

We covered sandwiches, burgers and coffee. It was only a matter of time before we got to ice cream, and honestly this might be the list we argued about the most. Etobicoke has no shortage of great scoops, so consider these five a starting point. They're in no particular order, and yes, we know we probably left off your favourite. Tell us about it.

1. Tom's Dairy Freeze, The Queensway

If you grew up around here, Tom's needs no introduction. It's been at 630 The Queensway for close to 70 years, and the lineup on a warm July evening is a neighbourhood tradition all on its own. Get the chocolate vanilla twist dipped in cherry, grab a picnic table, and take your time. They do burgers and souvlaki too, so plenty of people make a whole dinner out of it.

2. Ed's Real Scoop, Mimico

Ed's started in The Beaches more than 20 years ago and we're lucky one of the locations landed on Lake Shore Boulevard West in Mimico. Everything is made in house, including the chocolates and fudge in the front case. The burnt marshmallow is the flavour people talk about, and for good reason. It pairs nicely with a walk along the Mimico waterfront afterward.

3. Demetres, The Kingsway

Demetres has been on Bloor Street West since 1989 and it's more of a full dessert outing than a quick scoop. The ice creams and sorbettos are made in house and usually arrive on top of a crepe or waffle with Belgian chocolate sauce and fresh fruit. Good spot to end a night out on Bloor, and they stay open late.

4. The Loop Creamery, Long Branch

The Loop makes frozen custard, which is a bit richer and silkier than regular ice cream, in small batches with six simple ingredients. It has quietly built a loyal following in Long Branch and it deserves it. While you're down there, the stretch of Lake Shore around it has a nice run of independent shops worth browsing.

5. Lola's Gelato, Humber Bay Shores

Lola's sits on Brookers Lane just steps from the waterfront trail, which makes it dangerous if you live in the area. Proper Italian style gelato and organic espresso, with classics like pistachio and hazelnut alongside seasonal flavours. There are vegan and dairy free options as well, including an oat milk hazelnut. Take your cup straight to the lake.
