Ever found a place where the community spirit is so strong that the members literally built the clubhouse with their own hands? That's the Lakeshore Yacht Club. LSYC is a true hidden gem of the west end, proof of what a dedicated group of boaters can build through sweat equity and a shared love of the water.
Exploring the lakeshore neighbourhoods around the club? Our guides cover Long Branch, New Toronto and more.
Since its establishment in 1991, the club at 76 Colonel Samuel Smith Park Drive has been operated almost entirely by its members. The docks, the gardens, the grounds: the people doing the work are the same people sailing out of the harbour. That hands-on approach keeps the club affordable, and it builds a camaraderie money can't buy. Members from Mimico, Sunnylea and The Kingsway don't join for a slip. They join a crew that takes real pride in the place.
The setting may be the most peaceful in Etobicoke: tucked behind the Humber College Lakeshore campus, wrapped in the greenery of Colonel Samuel Smith Park, with the Waterfront Trail passing right through the grounds. The clubhouse Great Room hosts up to a hundred members for events, and the weather-proof barbecue pit anchors summer dinners. There's no commercial bar or restaurant, members bring their own food and drink, which keeps the atmosphere relaxed and the costs friendly, exactly as the founders intended.
More life on the water:
Quiet location, busy calendar. LSYC maintains a healthy racing programme and a cruising schedule that includes trips to Cathedral Bluffs and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. The season kicks off with the excitement of Launch Day in late April and rolls through theme nights and potlucks in the Great Room. For many members from the Islington area, the social side matters as much as the sailing, and the city's hustle feels miles away even though the west end is a short drive up the road.
Though private, LSYC offers several membership levels, including social and crew memberships for people who want in on the community without owning a boat. That openness keeps the Lakeshore's maritime heritage alive and within reach for the next generation. If you're ready to trade traffic noise for wind in the rigging, this is one of the most authentic ways to live Lake Ontario.
LSYC is community spirit in action: hard work, shared responsibility, and a peaceful, affordable club that captures the best of the Etobicoke lakeshore. Institutions like this are a big part of why people who move to the south end tend to stay.
