We did sandwiches. We did ice cream. It was only a matter of time before we got to coffee, and honestly the west end runs on it.

Downtown gets all the café attention, but Etobicoke holds its own, from a spot tucked inside an office tower to a roaster right on the Mississauga line. Here are five we keep going back to. Order what you like and argue with us later.

1. Aroma Espresso Bar

Start on Bloor. Aroma is the busy one, the Mediterranean inspired spot a lot of us fold into the morning without thinking about it. The coffee is consistent, which matters more than people admit, and every cup comes with a little square of dark chocolate on the lid. If you skipped breakfast, stay for a made to order sandwich or a salad. Half café, half lunch counter.

Where: 3280 Bloor Street West, Etobicoke.

2. Café 295

This one you have to know about to find. Café 295 sits inside an office tower on The West Mall, the kind of place you would walk right past. Worth the detour. It is the quiet option when you want a good cup without the crowd.

3. Jimmy's Coffee

Jimmy's brought its downtown cool to Mimico Village and it suits the neighbourhood. Tin ceilings, mismatched seating, a wall of famous Jimmies from Hendrix to Carter, and enough outlets that you can actually get some work done. Order the JVO, their vanilla and caramel latte, with a bacon cheddar scone. Thank us later.

4. Yellow Cup Cafe

Yellow Cup has been on The East Mall since 2000, with a lived in, retro feel you cannot fake. The coffee is good, but the reason to come is the crepes and waffles. There are more than twenty of them. Go savoury with a Philly steak breakfast crepe or sweet with strawberry and chocolate. At heart it is a weekend brunch place.

5. Fair Grounds Organic Cafe and Roastery

Last stop is right where Etobicoke becomes Mississauga, just south of the QEW. Fair Grounds roasts its own organic, fair trade beans on site, and you can smell it the second you walk in. This is the one for the purists. Sample a small batch, watch the roasting, grab a bag of beans to take home.

Where: 1106 Ogden Avenue, Mississauga, on the Etobicoke border.
