Dog Friendly Patios in Etobicoke: Five Spots Worth the Walk

Yes, you can bring your dog to a patio in Etobicoke, and the best of them are clustered in the south end between Mimico, Humber Bay Shores and New Toronto. Five spots are below, with a map. One of them runs a standing Sunday dog hang with discounted pints, which is about as close to a purpose-built dog patio as this side of the city gets.

First, the rule nobody explains

Ontario changed this in 2020. Amendments to the Health Protection and Promotion Act and the food premises regulation let operators allow pet dogs in outdoor eating areas, provided food is not prepared in that area. Some low-risk indoor situations opened up too, which is why a few breweries can wave you in past the door.

The word doing the work there is allow. It is permission granted to the operator, not a right you carry. A patio can say no, and plenty do, usually because the kitchen pass or a prep station sits inside the patio footprint. Service animals are a separate matter and have broader access under Ontario Regulation 191/11.

So the practical upshot: policies vary block to block, and they change. Call ahead if you are making a trip of it.

1. Great Lakes Brewery, 30 Queen Elizabeth Blvd

This is the one to build a Sunday around. Hair of the Dog runs every Sunday from 1 to 4 PM, free to join, with $6 sixteen ounce pours on select beers, and the brewery describes the space as a dog friendly patio and lawn. The lawn part matters. Most patios give you a chair and a hope; this one gives a dog somewhere to actually settle.

They also run Barks + Brews with Fetch + Releash, a rescue, where adoptable dogs come out with their foster parents. The most recent one was Saturday, August 15, 2026, and there is a dog fashion show, which is exactly as good as it sounds. Watch their events page for the next date.

Full beer list and hours are on the Great Lakes Brewery site. Worth knowing: this is an industrial pocket off the Queensway, not a strolling street. You are driving or transiting here, and then staying a while.

2. Birds and Beans, 2413 Lake Shore Blvd W

A Mimico fixture since 2003, roasting organic Bird Friendly certified coffee, with a shaded outdoor seating area that reportedly keeps water bowls out. Birds and Beans opened a second location in 2025 at 160 Marine Parade Drive in Humber Bay Shores, so you can hit one at each end of a waterfront walk.

The Lake Shore location is the better patio stop. It is a short detour off the waterfront trail, which is the whole reason it works: dog is already tired, you are already outside, coffee is right there.

3. Leni Poki, 300 Manitoba St

Bubble tea, fruit teas and poke, opened in 2024, tucked into the Manitoba Street stretch of Mimico. Leni Poki is on this list mostly for one reason: pup cups. If your dog has learned that other dogs get things at patios and has opinions about it, this solves the problem for a couple of dollars.

Seating is modest. Think of it as a stop on a walk rather than a destination.

4. Metanoia Cafe and Dessert Bar, 110 Marine Parade Dr

Croissants, a dessert counter, and a saffron latte that people make a point of mentioning. Metanoia sits in the Humber Bay Shores condo cluster with a laid back patio that welcomes dogs. Being closed Sundays is the one thing to plan around, and Sunday is exactly when you were going to go, so write it down.

If you live in one of the Marine Parade or Lake Shore towers, this is your default. If you are visiting, park once and do Metanoia and the Humber Bay Birds and Beans in the same loop, they are about two hundred metres apart.

5. The Sydney Grind, 2883 Lake Shore Blvd W

Australian style coffee in New Toronto, with bistro tables out front. The Sydney Grind is the western anchor of this list and the one that feels most like a neighbourhood counter rather than a destination. Flat whites, lamingtons, a dog sitting under the table watching Lake Shore go by.

It closes mid afternoon, so this is a morning or lunch stop.

What we verified and what we did not

A note on sourcing, because patio dog policies go stale faster than anything else we write about.

Only Great Lakes Brewery publishes its dog policy itself. The other four come from a roundup by a local dog walking company from July 2025, which we cross checked against each business's current address, phone and website but could not confirm with the operators directly. Treat those four as very likely rather than guaranteed. If one has changed its policy, tell us and we will update this.

Why they all cluster down here

Look at the map again. Every pin sits south of the Gardiner, most of them within a few blocks of Lake Shore Boulevard West.

That is not a coincidence, and it is not really about dogs. It is about the shape of the built form. South Etobicoke has continuous retail strips at street level, a waterfront trail running the length of it, and a lot of condo households in Humber Bay Shores and Mimico without a backyard. Put those three together and you get high foot traffic passing small patios, with a meaningful share of that traffic holding a leash. Operators respond to who is actually walking by.

North of the Queensway the pattern changes. More detached housing, more backyards, retail set behind parking lots rather than on the sidewalk, and fewer people passing a patio on foot with a dog. Great Lakes Brewery is the exception that proves it, and it works by being a destination people drive to and settle into for an afternoon.

The counterpoint, since we are making a tidy argument: five patios is a small sample, and we selected for spots that already had a public dog policy, which biases toward the walkable strips. There are almost certainly Kingsway and Queensway patios that quietly welcome dogs and have never said so online. If you know one, we would like to hear about it.
